Home electrification is an electrical project as much as a heating one. Before a heat pump goes in, the service, the panel and the envelope have to be able to carry it โ and the combustion appliances you keep have to keep venting safely.

Home Electrification Starts at the Panel
The heat pump is the easy part. What decides whether a conversion goes smoothly is the electrical service feeding the house, and in a lot of Northern New Jersey housing stock that service was sized decades ago for a gas furnace, a range and an air conditioner.
So the first thing we look at is not the boiler room. It is the meter, the service conductors and the panel: how much capacity is there, how many breaker spaces are left, whether the busbar can take what a heat pump and its auxiliary heat will draw, and whether the existing panel is a type an electrician will still work on. A calculation decides this. Adding an outdoor unit, an air handler and a strip heater to a panel that is already close to its limit is how a conversion turns into a service upgrade nobody budgeted for.
The second thing is the envelope, because the heat pump you have to buy is a direct function of the load you have not yet reduced. Air sealing and insulation done first shrink the equipment, shrink the electrical draw, and often remove the need for the panel work entirely.
The third thing catches people out. Remove a gas furnace from a basement and you may leave a water heater venting alone into a chimney flue sized for both appliances. An orphaned water heater in an oversized, cold masonry flue can fail to draft properly. That is a safety item, and it has to be planned for in the same job, not discovered afterwards.

Ways to Electrify a Building
Full conversion is one option and rarely the first one. These are the paths we design for across residential and light commercial decarbonization work.
Full Heat Pump Conversion
The furnace or boiler comes out and a cold-climate heat pump carries the whole load, with auxiliary heat sized for the coldest hours rather than for the whole season.
Hybrid, or Dual Fuel
A heat pump paired with the existing furnace. The controls hand over at a switchover point you set, so the electric side does the ordinary winter and the burner covers the extremes.
Zone-by-Zone Ductless
For houses with no usable ductwork, or an addition the trunk never reached. Wall units and ceiling cassettes let you electrify in stages instead of all at once.
Duct Correction First
Electric heat arrives cooler than a gas flame does. Undersized returns and leaky trunks that a furnace could brute-force through will leave a heat pump short.
Commercial Decarbonization
Rooftop unit changeouts to heat pump equipment, variable refrigerant flow, and control sequences rewritten so the building stops fighting itself.
Controls and Staging
Lockouts, switchover logic, defrost behaviour and how the thermostat handles recovery. Badly set controls are the usual reason an electric system disappoints.

Commission the Controls
Switchover, auxiliary heat lockout and defrost verified in operation, so the system does not lean on strip heat out of habit.

Electrification FAQs
Do I need an electrical service upgrade to electrify my heating?
Sometimes, not always. It depends on the existing service size, what else is already on it, how much auxiliary electric heat the design calls for, and whether the panel has spare spaces and a busbar rating that can take them. A load calculation answers it in an afternoon. Where the margin is thin, reducing the heating load through the envelope or choosing equipment with a lower auxiliary draw can keep the existing service.
What is hybrid heat, and is it worth doing in New Jersey?
Hybrid heat installation in New Jersey means keeping a working gas furnace and adding a heat pump that handles the milder majority of the heating season, with the controls switching to the burner below a set outdoor temperature. It suits houses where the furnace has life left, where the panel is tight, or where the owner wants to move gradually. It also removes the worst-case night from the conversation entirely.
Will a heat pump keep up when it is well below freezing?
A cold-climate unit that was selected against the region’s design temperature will. Capacity does fall as it gets colder, which is exactly why the selection is made from the extended performance tables rather than the headline rating. The failure mode people describe โ running constantly and never quite getting there โ is almost always a unit chosen on nameplate tonnage.
Why does the air from a heat pump feel cooler?
Because it is. A gas furnace delivers short bursts of very hot air; a heat pump delivers a longer run of moderately warm air. The room reaches the same temperature, but if a supply register sits where people sit, the difference is noticeable. Register placement and airflow balancing are part of the design for exactly this reason.
What happens to my water heater if the furnace is removed?
It becomes the only appliance on a flue that was sized for two, which can leave it struggling to establish draft in a cold masonry chimney. The options are relining the flue to suit one appliance, moving the water heater to a direct-vent or power-vent unit, or electrifying it at the same time. Whichever route you pick, it belongs in the conversion plan, not in a follow-up call in February.
Can I electrify one part of the house at a time?
Yes, and it is often the sensible route in an older house with an addition or a converted attic. Ductless zones let you take the rooms the existing system serves worst, prove the approach, and leave the central system carrying the rest until it reaches the end of its life anyway.
Does building decarbonization work the same way in a commercial building?
The principles hold, the constraints change. Electrical distribution, roof structure, tenant occupancy schedules and the existing control system all set the pace, and the work usually has to be phased around a building that cannot stop. Our design-build team handles that side.
Are there incentives for converting?
Electrification is what most of the current New Jersey programs are aimed at, so it is worth checking before the design is fixed rather than after. Qualification depends on equipment tier, certified pairing and paperwork sequence โ the details are on our rebates and incentives page.
