What Your AC Should Do at 100 Degrees
Equipment here is sized to a design day in the low nineties. Above that it is expected to run without stopping and hold a few degrees back from the set point. That is not a fault. Failing to hold at eighty-five is. Knowing which one you have is the whole diagnosis.
When the AC Is Not Cooling
Every no-cool call lands in one of three buckets, and telling them apart takes about fifteen minutes with the right instruments. Either the system is not running at all, or it is running but not moving heat, or it is moving heat but not moving air. Each bucket has its own short list of suspects, and each has its own test.
Not running is electrical: a swollen run capacitor, a contactor with pitted contacts, a blown fuse in the disconnect, or a float switch that opened because the condensate drain plugged. Running but not moving heat is refrigeration: charge that has leaked away, a condenser coil packed with cottonwood, a metering device that stopped metering, a compressor with valves that no longer seal. Moving heat but not moving air is airflow: a filter nobody changed, a blower wheel caked with dust, a crushed flex run, a coil frozen into a block of ice.
Those three paths look identical from the thermostat. They look nothing alike on a manifold gauge set, an amp clamp and a manometer. That is why we test the system running before quoting anything, and why a low refrigerant charge gets a leak search rather than a top-up. Refrigerant is not consumed. If it is low, it went somewhere, and adding more without finding the hole means paying twice.

Why is my AC not cooling?
Start with what the equipment is doing. If the outdoor unit is silent, it is electrical or a safety switch has opened. If it is running and the air from the vents is barely cooler than the room, it is refrigerant or a filthy condenser. If the air is properly cold at the register but the house never gets there, the equipment is fine and the ducts are not delivering. Two things worth checking yourself first: the filter, and whether the thermostat fan is set to auto rather than on.
Why is my AC blowing warm air?
Warm rather than merely weak usually means the compressor is not running while the indoor blower still is. Common causes are a failed run capacitor, a contactor that will not pull in, a tripped high-pressure switch on a blocked condenser, or the outdoor disconnect pulled and never reseated after other work. If you can hear the indoor fan but the outdoor unit is dead quiet, that is the pattern.
Why is there ice on my AC line?
Ice means the coil dropped below freezing, and that happens for exactly two reasons: not enough air over it, or not enough refrigerant in it. Shut the cooling off, leave the fan running to thaw it, and change the filter while you wait. If it ices again after a clean filter, stop running it. Operating on a frozen coil sends liquid back to the compressor, which turns a small repair into a big one.
Why does my air conditioner keep tripping the breaker?
Something is drawing more current than the circuit allows, and the timing tells you where to look. Tripping the instant it calls points at a short or a locked compressor. Tripping after it has run a while points at a motor heating up, a failing capacitor loading the windings, or a condenser so dirty that head pressure is driving current past nameplate. Resetting a breaker repeatedly is worth avoiding โ each attempt is another locked-rotor hit on the compressor.
Can you still get refrigerant for my older system?
If it is an R-22 system, production ended years ago and only reclaimed stock remains, which makes recharging a leaking unit an expensive way to buy a few weeks. Newer equipment runs R-410A, and the industry is now moving again to lower-impact blends. Where a system is old enough to be on R-22 and it has lost its charge, the conversation is usually about replacement rather than repair.
How much does AC repair cost?
Four things drive it: which component failed, whether the refrigerant circuit has to be opened, how the equipment is reached, and what refrigerant it holds. A capacitor on a ground-mounted condenser is the cheap end. An evaporator coil leak in an attic air handler on obsolete refrigerant is the other end, and at that point the honest advice is often to spend the money on new equipment. You get the diagnosis and the price before the work starts, and financing is available if it turns into a replacement.
