Furnace Installation Begins With Arithmetic
The number that matters is heat loss: how much energy the building sheds on a design-temperature night, room by room. Wall construction, glazing, orientation, air leakage, insulation depth and volume all feed it. That figure sets the capacity of the equipment, and nothing else should.
The habit in this trade is to read the plate on the old unit and order the same thing. It is quick and it is usually wrong, because that unit was often oversized when it went in, and because the house has changed since โ new windows, a finished attic, insulation added, an extension built. Copying the nameplate copies somebody else’s mistake and locks it in for another twenty years.
Oversizing is not a harmless margin either. A furnace with more capacity than the house can absorb satisfies the thermostat fast, stops, and starts again a few minutes later, so the ignition components take a beating, the cabinet swings hot and cold, and the far bedroom is still cold because the burner never ran long enough to move air out there.
So we measure the house, then we measure the duct system that has to carry the air, and only then do we put equipment on paper.

Load Calculation

Commissioning

Installation Questions
When should I replace my furnace?
Plan it in the shoulder season of the year the unit turns fifteen, rather than reacting the night it quits. Three things push the date forward: rooms that have never been comfortable, running cost climbing while usage stays flat, and a second significant repair inside two winters. Replacing on your own schedule means the survey is unhurried, the equipment is chosen rather than whatever is on the shelf, and the crew can do the duct work the house actually needs.
What size furnace do I need?
Whatever the load calculation says, which is usually less than the unit coming out. There is no reliable shortcut from floor area โ two houses of identical size in Ridgewood can differ enormously depending on glazing, insulation and how leaky the envelope is. Anyone who sizes your system from square footage over the phone is quoting a box, not designing a heating system.
Can I keep my existing ductwork?
Often most of it, sometimes not the returns. Older Northern New Jersey systems were built around furnaces that pushed less air, and modern equipment โ particularly a heat pump โ needs more of it at a lower temperature. We measure what the duct system can carry before quoting. Where the answer is not enough, the fix is usually a larger return path and a few resized branches rather than a whole new system of ducts.
What drives the price of a heating installation?
Five things, in roughly this order: the heat loss of the house, which sets capacity; the efficiency tier and staging you choose; the condition of the ductwork and how much of it has to change; venting and gas or electrical work, which is where oil conversions and attic units get expensive; and access โ a walk-in basement is a different job from an attic reached by pull-down stairs. Every quote we write itemises those, and financing is available.
How long does a furnace installation take?
A straight swap in an accessible basement is usually a single day. Add sheet metal changes, a new flue liner or a second zone and it becomes two. Oil to gas conversions and attic air handlers run longer because the utility, the tank contractor and the inspection have to be sequenced. We give you the number of days at proposal, and if the heat has to be off overnight we say so upfront.
Do I need a permit to replace a furnace in New Jersey?
Yes. Heating equipment replacement is permitted work in New Jersey municipalities and the inspection is part of the job, not an optional extra. We pull the permit in your township, book the inspector and attend. Unpermitted equipment surfaces later at the worst moment โ a sale, an insurance claim, or a rebate application that gets rejected for want of a closed permit.
Is an oil to gas conversion worth doing?
Where gas is already in the street, usually yes โ you lose the tank, the deliveries and the annual nozzle-and-filter routine. The work is more than the appliance: tank removal or abandonment, service and meter sizing with the utility, a liner or a new vent route, and often a smaller boiler or furnace than the oil unit it replaces. Where gas is not in the street, a cold-climate heat pump is now the serious alternative and may qualify for state incentives.
What do I get when the crew leaves?
Commissioning figures for your own records โ airflow, gas pressure, temperature rise and the control settings we programmed โ plus the permit reference, the equipment registration lodged with the manufacturer, and any rebate submission we filed on your behalf. The registration matters: parts coverage from most manufacturers depends on the unit being registered promptly after the install.
