Because the blower is still running while the burners are not. Watch one cycle: if the flame lights and dies after a few seconds, suspect the flame sensor or the igniter. If the burners never light at all, the inducer may not be proving through the pressure switch, which points at a blocked flue or combustion-air intake. On a high-efficiency unit a full condensate trap will do the same thing. If the vent is blocked, stop resetting the unit and let a technician clear it.

The system reaches its own high-temperature limit before it reaches your thermostat setting, so it shuts down and starts again minutes later. Nearly always that is heat piling up in the cabinet because air is not moving through it — a loaded filter, closed registers, a crushed return, or an undersized duct system. Sometimes it is a genuinely oversized furnace, and that is a sizing problem a repair cannot solve.

There are four things worth checking yourself. Thermostat batteries and mode. The filter, which should let daylight through. The service switch on or beside the unit, which looks like a light switch and gets flipped by accident. And the breaker. On a condensing furnace, also look for a float switch on a full condensate line. Past that point you are into gas and line voltage, and that is where you stop and call.

Only older equipment has a standing pilot; anything built in the last couple of decades uses an electronic igniter and there is nothing to light. Where there is a pilot, follow the instructions printed on the burner door — the control has to sit at off long enough for gas to clear first. If the pilot lights but dies when you release the knob, the thermocouple is the usual culprit.

Treat it as urgent. Natural gas burns crisp blue; yellow and lazy means the burn is starved of air or the flame is being disturbed, and incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. Causes range from dirty burners to a blocked flue to a cracked heat exchanger pulling air across the flame. Switch the system off, ventilate, and call. Working carbon monoxide alarms on every floor are not optional in a house with fuel-burning equipment.
