Can I put central air in a Westfield colonial that only has radiators?
Yes, but almost never with a conventional furnace-style air handler and rectangular trunk. There is nowhere to put it. The two routes that work in this stock are a ductless system with a head or a cassette per zone, or small-duct high-velocity, which uses flexible two-inch tubing that will thread through a stud bay and an old chase. Both leave the boiler and the radiators exactly as they are.
Will you have to open up the plaster walls?
We plan the route to avoid it. Stacked closets, an old laundry chute, the space beside a chimney breast and the back of a stair usually give a path from cellar to attic. Where an opening is unavoidable it is cut small, in a closet or a corner, and the exterior refrigerant runs are boxed in a paintable cover on a wall the street does not see.
Why is the finished third floor unusable in July?
Because the roof deck sits right above the ceiling and there is often nothing but a thin batt behind the knee walls. The room gains heat from three sides all afternoon, so sizing it by floor area under-reads it badly. We calculate that room on its own, and if the knee wall cavities are open we say so โ insulating them first makes the equipment smaller.
What are the disadvantages of a ductless system?
