Bloomfield was built in two waves and both of them burned oil. The pre-war half — the streets around the green, Watsessing, the Broad Street corridor — went up when a coal boiler in the cellar was standard, and got an oil burner dropped into that same boiler in the thirties or forties. The post-war half towards Brookdale is capes, splits and small colonials from the late forties and fifties, built with oil-fired warm air from the start. Gas arrived later on both sides, and the switch was usually made one house at a time by whoever was cheapest that year.

The result is spillage at the draft hood and moisture in the chimney. The fix is a correctly sized liner, or moving the water heater to a power-vented or direct-vent appliance.

Why is my furnace short cycling?

Around here it is oversizing more often than a bad control. A furnace with twice the capacity the house needs satisfies the thermostat in a few minutes, shuts down, cools, and starts again, which is hard on the ignition components and leaves the rooms furthest from the plant cold anyway. Dirty filters, a blocked flue, a failing limit switch and a thermostat in a bad location all do the same thing, so we measure temperature rise and cycle length before recommending anything.
