What Is a Heat Pump, and Why Is Everyone in New Jersey Installing One?

Heat pumps are on nearly every replacement quote in New Jersey now, and most homeowners have only a vague sense of what one is. The short answer: it is an air conditioner that can run in both directions, and that single change is why it heats a house for less.

Moving heat instead of making it

A furnace makes heat by burning fuel. A heat pump does not make heat at all — it moves heat that already exists from one place to another, using refrigerant and a compressor to do it.

That distinction is the whole efficiency story. Burning fuel is limited by how much energy the fuel contains. Moving heat is not, because you are only paying to run the pump, not to create the heat. A heat pump routinely delivers several times more heat energy into a house than the electrical energy it consumes.

Where the heat comes from in winter

This is where most people get stuck: how do you extract heat from air that is already cold? The answer is that cold air is only cold relative to us. There is a great deal of thermal energy in air well below freezing, and refrigerant boiling at a much lower temperature than the outdoor air will happily absorb it.

The outdoor coil takes heat out of the winter air, the compressor raises its temperature, and the indoor coil releases it into the house. In summer a reversing valve flips the cycle and the same equipment moves heat the other way. One machine, both seasons.

What changed, and why now

Older heat pumps genuinely did lose most of their output in real cold, which is why they earned a reputation in the Northeast that took decades to shake. Cold-climate models changed that. Variable-speed compressors and better refrigerant control let modern equipment hold useful capacity well below freezing rather than falling off a cliff at forty degrees.

What it means for your house

Heat pumps deliver a larger volume of air at a lower supply temperature than the furnace they replace. Air from a register feels cool to the hand even while the house is warming, which is normal and worth knowing in advance.

It also has a practical consequence: the duct system has to carry more air than it did before. A house with undersized returns or restricted trunks that got by with a furnace can struggle with a heat pump, which is why ductwork gets measured before any of this is quoted. Where ducts do not exist or cannot be improved, ductless systems do the same job without them.

You do not have to choose all at once

A dual-fuel setup pairs a heat pump with the existing furnace and switches between them at whatever outdoor temperature makes sense for your fuel prices. The heat pump handles the large majority of the season; the furnace covers the coldest stretch. It is a common answer for New Jersey homes with a furnace that still has life in it.
